Premium Bonds

Got 30k in them and won 3 prizes today.... And won 8 in the last 6 months

Banks are giving nothing so its a free hit as far as I'm concerned.....

Got 8k in and not won loads but im just waiting for that big one.. don't want to be greedy with £25 and £50s etc 🤣

When you say they are not as good as they were a few years ago it depends which way you look at it they actually scrapped some of the big prize funds (£500,000 and £250,000) but increased the smaller ones like in the £25,000 £10,000 £5,000 brackets so in reality more people are now actually winning but yes smaller prize funds.
I’ve had premium bonds for years and although the most I’ve ever won is only £100 in one month I’ve averaged between £450-£550 per annum which like a poster above says beats any savings account returns hands down.
That’s the think you have to win something to benefit.

I hold the maximum of 50K and my Mother has 20K.
We have won £75 between us in last 6 months.
The maximum I have ever won is £500 and in previour years won around £300/400 per annum.
Over 20 years around £8K. It is a safe tax free haven but not serious investment.

I haven’t won this month.

On the contrary I invested £7000 in a stocks and shares ISA around 20 years ago.
It is now worth £62K.
Yes stocks and shares ISA’s have done very well, the dividends paid out alone each year, far outweigh any returns on Premium Bonds unless you are very lucky that is.

i worked at Bonds 77-02. Knew Pete Wassall very well. Worked in Marketing and as Press Officer so was always asked about buying in blocks (consecutive numbers) etc. Believe me it makes no difference. And as for repaying and buying again - you just miss a months draw. When I worked there one particular stat that stood out was that (at the time the Max was £20k) if you held the max you ( given average luck) would win 12 prizes a year ( the majority being £50 - the minimum at the time). On a sample at the time of a 12 month period 1 max holder won 20 times ( the majority being 10-14) but 1 holder in the sample won 0 prizes. Its the luck of the draw.

They contact you at the address they have recorded for you. If you haven’t moved there should be no problem. Not informing them of your new address is the main reason there are many unpaid prizes.

Google informs me that with "average luck" a £1000 holding for 12 month will give you a return of nothing. ☹️

Always buy as late in the month as you can. One clear month before being eligible for the prize draw - eg buy 31 December your bonds will be in February Draw Buy on 1 January and you are eligible for March and subsequent draws.

I worked Prebonds 1960/1972. It's where I met MrsDP.
We have a few £Thousand and get the occasional prize but happy to leave them there.
They moved to Glasgow many years ago.
Any local footballers of that era would know Pete Wassall, good friend (through football team) of mine.
Pete went to Glasgow when they moved and being the bright guy he was he got promotions and eventually came back home.
Unfortunately Pete died at a relatively early age. I had been in touch with him even when I was down South.
A great guy and friend.
ERNIE actually means Electronic Random Number Indicator Equipment.
Dave, when I was running my Sunday side we were desperate to play on Les Knight's superb Prebonds pitch which was as good if not better than most pro team's pitches, Peter Wassall told me to write in to the football committee (which Peter was part of) and basically outlined to me what I needed to do and say to get my side on Prebonds. I was invited to the next committee meeting and bingo we had our contract to play on on the hallowed turf, all thanks to Peter. I would also say his brother Dave was as good a striker as this coast has seen even though he operated a bit before my time. RIP to both of them.

Yes, had a return of much more than I would have in an ISA over 12 months.
Surely that is just a bank or building society ISA.
Share related ISA’s have soared. Just dividends alone far outweighs the puny returns on premium bonds or Banks
Even one of my low risk share ISA has a 10% return over 2 years.

RB. As club secretary for a few years, I had close contact with Les, and Pete.
Dave Wassall was a terrific CF and Pete an excellent Keeper. When Pete got promoted and went to Glasgow he played for one of
the Scottish lower League sides (memory lapse, can't remember which one).
Unfortunately Pete passed away relatively young. I had kept in touch when we moved South in the early 70s.
