Players you liked despite the consensus saying that they were bobbins

I make no secret of the fact I love Sullay. I love the prospect of magic, the little moment where he just does something no one else can. He's not flavour of the month right now but I don't care. He's class.

But I don't want to debate that. You can have your fetish for limited players who 'put a shift in' and sweat a lot. That's fine by me. This thread is not a Sullay debate.

What I want to know is what players who haven't been universally loved did you really like? When did you swim against the tide of popular opinion?

Did anyone actually think Anthony Evans was decent or Andy Reid was doing a better job than people made out?

Go.

I used to really like David Robinson. He was rubbish, but I just liked him. Don't really know why. Played up front when Bamber was out for best part of a year. Used to evoke a muttering noise when his name was announced.

Rory Prendergast always got dogs abuse but I always thought he was ok.
He could cross like a dream but I have never seen a slower left winger. Did everything really slowly. He had skill but he like watching a normal player in half speed.

I know what you mean. I sort of admired him for being so odd but that team was so poor and him shuffling down the left just sort of summed it up.

Been loads over the years

Junior Bent, Kiegan Parker, Brian Read, David Bardsley, Billy Rodaway, even Paul Stewart

All used to get abuse from the terraces

For England its Sterling and before him Lampard and Beckham

Don't get it at all

Quite liked Saer Sene, who joined back when the club was using a shepherds hook to drag passers by off the street, putting them in a tangerine shirt and trying to convince the fans we'd signed a footballer. In his one sub appearance he tried to control a ball a couple of times and it provided the best entertainment I'd seen at Bloomfield Road for several years.

I liked Brian Reade. My sister came to one game with me once and thought Junior Bent was amazing cos he was dead fast. She's never ever been to another football game ever and still will cite Junior Bent as the best player she's ever seen.

Sterling is quality. He's like Parker. If he scored every chance he makes he'd break records. Parker was the same. He missed a lot and was offside a lot but if he hasn't been, he'd have got about 70 a season. A really good player to watch. Thrilling.

Never liked boring Frank. He was a good player, I just don't like him. Never have. Soz.

Parker should have scored 70 goals in the 1st play off tie against Oldham.
Was amazed how many chances a player could waste in one match🤣🤣🤣

Russell Coughlin was one of my favourite players of the late 80s - a superb passer, no little skill and a great antidote to much of what had come before under Eliis.
But because he was a bit slow and overweight he was always the target of the boo boys when things were going badly. And then there was the penalty miss after which the abuse got worse and he was never the same player again.

I agree with you David Robinson was utter utter shite, the best part about him was when he left the club!. I told him once to his face that he was utter shite as well,ok it took Mitch Cook and Tricky Trev holding him back to stop him twatting me,but I did tell him!.

Sir Richard Branson allegedly got the idea of flying a hot air balloon over the Atlantic
after watching that penalty

For Dirty- there have beed shedloads but a few stick out for toughing it out. Stephen Crainey was one who was unfortunate to get sent off in the POSF v PNE as I think we'd have beaten Watford in the final.
For Blackpool I always thought Colin Hendry got far too much stick for the players he brought in, where those players subsequently got it too. Richie Wellens was one he inherited but a had a touch of class about him and he shouldn't have been allowed to leave.

Another one for us oldies - back in the day, when I was in the scratching shed with my Dad, he used to moan like fk about Gordon Milne & Ronnie Brown.

To be honest, as a kid, I never had much of an opinion about Gordon Milne, but I quite liked Ronnie Brown & thought he was a bit cool....🤷‍♂️

Knew better than to open a ‘discussion’ with my Dad though - such were the times..

You obviously didn't go to Wembley to watch England games

The pair of them got loads of abuse

Beckham after the world cup was public enemy number 1 for many a year
Been to loads he got stick for red card and his lifestyle but if you read the thread title it says players that people thought were bobbins lampard won everything at Chelsea and beckham played for united, Real Madrid and ac Milan. You talk bobbins mate

James Quinn, i thought he was the business back in the day always running onto channel balls.
Quinny was one of those players who, if his first touch was good, went on to have a good game. If it was a bad one, might as well sub him straight away

Loved Quinny he decided to leave us when he was stood in court for non payment of the poll tax, realising he couldn’t afford to live on the 200 odd quid a week wage.

One for the oldies, I actually thought John Evanson could pass a ball quite well but my god he got some stick!
Allegedly had a row with Mickey Walsh to the extent that he wouldn't pass to him. Not ideal for your winger and centre forward.

I think he suffered from being compared to Micky Burns.

The Kirk Broadfoot post reminds me of fans shouting "DINK" when Mike Davies used to dink the ball out of play now and again (think it was Mike Davies?)
I can remember Iain Hesford getting stick from the South Paddock terraces, and I thought he was a good keeper.
I can remember it affecting him in a home game against Exeter. We were 1-0 up, but he let a soft one in in the closing minutes and we drew 1-1. Billy Ronson had to console him when the teams walked off at the end. I
