Players you liked despite the consensus saying that they were bobbins

Going back to 1989/90 two of our new signings were Gordon Owen from Mansfield and Dave Lancaster from possibly Colne Dynamoes. The Gazette featured them both on the beach playing leapfrog. I was that incensed with the quality of players we were recruiting that I wrote to the Gazette complaining and they printed my letter. I later met Gordon Owen at the club at some kind of function and he was a top guy. Promised to score loads of goals but ended up with a total of 3 in two seasons! Don’t get me started on Dave Lancaster FFS

I still think Richard Kingson gets unnecessary abuse. Eccentric, yes, but anyone who went to Stoke or Sunderland knows he got us 6 points from nothing.

I think it's more criticism than abuse to be honest.

I'd suggest the criticism comes from those who may be of an opinion that he lost us more points than he gained.

I can only speak for myself, I think Kingson was useless and should have been nowhere near our first team - especially in the Prem.

I don't blame Kingson for that - why wouldn't he want to play ? - I think the blame lies with Olly and Koko.

I think Kingson was absolutely useless to be honest, I think it was clear to see that he didn't do much to inspire confidence in the rest of the defence/team.

Been loads over the years

Junior Bent, Kiegan Parker, Brian Read, David Bardsley, Billy Rodaway, even Paul Stewart

All used to get abuse from the terraces

For England its Sterling and before him Lampard and Beckham

Don't get it at all

I'm struggling to remember when Junior Bent was anything other than chite for us ?

Our manager(s) at the time must have agreed because he was sat next to me in the South Stand for most games.

No, that was Dave Lancaster.

That's right it was.

Why did I think that he was called David Robinson too ?

I must be losing it but I'm still saying the one that played with Bamber during King Billy's reign was a Geordie and may have played for Newcastle - albeit very briefly - in his younger days, we may have even got him from Newcastle ?

Got him from reading but he was a Geordie and think he did start at Newcastle.

Mike Conroy
Scott Darton
Or were they both actually crap?? 🤣
They really were. Conroy didn't bother me cos he was old but Dodgy was a player I always wanted to succeed and win us over cos he was only a young lad but he was bad for all of every game i saw him play. I think he did a good sliding tackle once, got a cheer, got up and then promptly kicked it straight out of play. For no reason

The legend that is GTF was never everyone's cup of tea.
I personally thought he was a terrific player.
GTF was sublime. Looked like he'd just got out of a plumbers van or off a building site. Expected him to be knocking plaster dust off his kit. Most normal looking bloke ever who you wouldn't give a second glance to in the crowd cos he just didn't have that athletic pro footballer vibe at all. Expected him to be a Sunday footballer but he was so flippin' clever and capable of outrageous stuff. I always like a player who plays totally differently than you expect from his physique.

It still cost the club £50,000 to discover Conroys best position was emergency goalkeeper!. Another wise old pro who came for a last pay day.

Oh, aye. I don't mean I liked him, I mean I wasn't really that fussed about him getting stick cos he'd had his career and evidently wasn't arsed but I didn't like seeing Darton ridiculed as a kid who was trying but he was so ridiculously bad you just had to laugh at him. He was like if I'd got a game sometimes.

I remember having a right go at Nigel Worthington at a fans forum for not playing Lee Philpott.
I used to think he could put in as good a cross as anyone, but his nickname in the East Paddock was P*sspot ! A player I liked but who was often accused of being too slow was Dave Linighan in the late 90`s always gave 100%, I think he scored the winner in a League Cup tie against Coventry when they were a league or two higher. I used to see him quite often in the Hand & Dagger at Salwick, back in the good old days when you could go in a pub lol

Thought you spot that! He does though!
Yup and apart from a refined and rather classy look as he humped his tool bag*, was he muttering about wanting to play professional football in Layton before tucking into his packed lunch from an 'only fools and horses' sandwich box?

*calm down @southshorepool

Ben Burgess, end of thread.
Did and still gets dogs abuse, in my opinion a good signing. May have not looked the worlds best footballer, but scored goals, his hold up play was excellent. Was in a team where the sum of it's parts, was better than any individual.
I thought he was reluctant to go for the ball sometimes after suffering a bad injury previously. In a similar vein to James Quinn, who’d often avoid headers. Aside from Gnands, there hasn’t been a big striker I’ve taken to since Dave Bamber.

Am I right in remembering you were never a big Murphs fan?

That is correct. Even when he was banging in the goals I gave Simmo full credit for his deliveries. Again, no Dave Bamber.

There have been loads of little strikers I’ve loved though: Super Scotty Taylor, Andy Watson Superstar, Brett (obvs), Super Kev, DJ Campbell Blackpool’s Number 9/39/19 (delete as applicable).

Andy Watson is an all time favourite of mine.

Some of the oldies on here may recall that the King and legend that is Alan Suddick got plenty of abuse from the terraces when he first arrived from Newcastle.
The way he glided around the pitch dispensing sublime skills that didn't always come off wasn't always appreciated by some. Bob Stokoe used to kick ass because he didn't think he was physical enough.
To those who have mentioned Ben Burgess I would recommend watching last Friday's excellent Seasiders Podcast with Ben.
He arrived here with crippling knee injuries and had to have pain killing injections just to get him through a game.

RLS - beat me to BBB. Always liked Ben, maybe because we're similar size. No, he wasn't quick over 5-10 yards, us lanky sods never are, but he was quick enough generally and as stated above the way he linked the team together was great, a very good focal point. I remember the game with the Neighbours when Clarke scored that belter in the first minute - after 40 mins it really should have been stopped to save them from further embarrassment. Then they get a free kick goal from that good left winger they had, and realistically by the end we were happy to hold out for the point. But when Ben went off on the hour we lost all shape and focus up front, and IMHO that was the reason we spent the last third constantly back foot.

Had a hell of a right foot cannonball too. My only regret for him was that he didn't use his size enough to bully defenders, or attack crosses in the box enough.
