MCLF: Match Blog - the Mighty vs Cheltenham Town

Pullets? Aren't they chickens or something?

Rhodes flicks his neck muscles and pullets the ball into the bottom corner.

The no.9 is only 21, maybe someone to stick in a January bid for?

At 3 0 it was all ridiculously easy, and we lost intensity for me. In a tougher game, as you say, I don't think we'd do that.

Still a work in progress but continual improvement is no bad thing.

Onwards and upwards.

It's a new word I've invented to sum up the idea of a bullet header that is punched with great force towards its destination

Words can mean more than one thing and their meaning evolves. For example, Rhodes is generally taken to mean a Greek city, but it now means 'goals' which used to be known as 'Gary' (and may be again)

Isn't language fun?!
Sometimes yeah.

The phrase 'Gary Goals' to me means a kind of ghost footballer that walks through walls and haunts defenders but doesn't score goals.

We've done this to death. A goal machine doesn't merely score goals. That's too obvious. Rhodes is great n'all but for me, he lacks nuance and his output is a bit obvious. Needs a good 7 game run without actually scoring.

(I'm joking, clearly)

Obviously. What is the difference between Rhodes and a Gaz? A goal a game.

Mad bants aside, I really enjoyed Kylian's big Gaz impression last night when he got the hump with being climbed all over and just rolled their lad with the manner of a WWF wrestler.

The final conclusion is spot on. We can't just absorb pressure and do teams on the break when they tire this season. It needs to be a case of taking the attack to the opposition. Containment will see us reduced to the playoffs or worse, which would be a crime with these attacking resources.

We didn't concede in our first 5 games, 4 league games and Derby away. Since then we've conceded 15 in 10 league games. We have good defenders and a good keeper so something isn't right structurally perhaps. Although Marv played the first 6 games and got dropped after the first game we conceded! At Lincoln.

Bring back Marv. Poor distribution but great defending.

Who do you drop him for?

Great read. You set the scene beautifully with that Horizon description and the moon photo.

For the record, I love tea but not coffee and Rhodes and Gaz I bloody love both.

You don't drop him, you put him in the team. 🤘

Who drops out for him? Dunno. But we are conceding too many too easily without him in the side. So it would need to be one of Casey or Pennington. I think it would perhaps need to be Pennington cos Casey is doing the tricky central/distribution role.

Him and for the wrong way round sorry🤷

Mind you last night Grimmy looked like the kid who didn't want to be in nets back in my Ansdell rec days, with his half arsed attempts to 'save' the two Cheltenham goals.

We have a very quiet team too. Grimmy Casey Pennington Dougall Morgan Dembele CJ etc. Where are the voices that keep driving the team? 3-0 to 3-2 against the bottom side is about a lack of leadership surely, players coasting and dropping off.

Not a cat in hells chance I’d introduce Marvin at this stage. Not unless we make a tactical change to shift to a 4 within game.
Agreed. I'm not arsed that we're conceding a few as we're scoring more and the back three are (with Hubby) moving the ball well and contributing to our overall play.

Hubby and Norburn out. That simple surely. Also Virtue is probably the other 'captainy' type who is also out.

Don't really get why he chucks Connolly in as skipper when Dougs exists and it playing brilliantly and is a first pick of late.

Also, you are clearly wanting our inspirational captain red card from last season back 🤣

There's love for all in Club Gaz. 🧡

Of course Hubby and Norks are the voices, but I mean we don't have enough. Kenny is awesome but he's he's a laid back chilled dude. Critch is building the team in his own image, with nice quiet people. Even Norks and Hubbo are a bit shy in reality. And when they're out it's like a silent disco.

I've forgotten last season. Deleted the file and emptied the recycle bin. No idea what you're on about.

A really good interview from Critchley there too. He was clearly disappointed, but had to temper that by focusing on the results.

It clearly wasn’t a tactical choice to drop deeper, but we’ve got to learn to manage those situations better.

I agree with him that we looked a bit complacent after the third. We got a bit wasteful with our opportunities and switched off a bit defensively.

"Yesterdays tomorrow's future is today's rookery it seems."

If you're going to use existential metaphors at least get your apostrophes right: "yesterday's"

Good stuff as ever, except I'm still failing to attach any positivity to Sonny's introduction to the game.
Critch nailed the tactics in the 1st half with our pace against their very high line and the balls over the top.
Change of shape by Cheltenham in the 2nd half and Critch's failure to find the right page in the FA Coaching manual to counter this and it all ended up a bit too close for comfort.

Cheltenham's kit reminds me of the sort worn by Swiss lower league sides.

I said before kick off - why would you go for such a washed out colour which just doesn't say anything? Awful kit.
