Lightning strikes boy

I had a reminiscent walk recently on Common Edge playing fields having not been on there for many, many years. The first thing I noticed was how much metal had been errected on there - metal fences with sectioned off areas, perimeter fences, floodlight pylons, sign posts etc. It all looked an eyesore compared to before and had taken away much of the natural look that it always had before.

I suppose it may never be know if these man-made constructions have led to this tragedy or whether it was just a freak of nature. Unbelievably sad no matter what happened.
Not really a coincidence. When you look at that lightning tracker and the actual recorded strike locations, it’s mainly the locations we were always told about: water - especially streams (can even be a little brook), trees, taller buildings, metal poles, the beach (silica/quartz).

I’m 31 in August and I honestly can’t remember a time something happened to someone I didn’t know and it’s affected me like this (Manchester Arena bombings & Rhys Jones come close), as I said last night my heart goes out too all his family, friends and those who were there last night.

I keep thinking about this little boy and getting upset, life is so cruel at times.

In relation to the first bit of my post, my heart always goes out to victims/families during horrific incidents say a terrorist attack or an innocent child murdered but at least in them instances you have the knowledge they were sadly on the wrong end of a absolute bastard(s) Despicable act. I cuddled my two year old more than ever last night to bed & I think it hits home a lot more when you have children of your own.

An innocent 9 year old killed playing football by lightening, I just can’t get my head around it at all.

Rest in peace young man and fly high, you did not deserve this.

The Telegraph are reporting the tragedy with a tribute from Clifton Rangers. It's utterly heart-breaking. I remember my kids who couldn't wait to get their kit on, excited, to get down to training. It was the most important thing in their lives. Who could imagine what would happen?

Clifton Rangers Junior Football Club said: "It is with great sadness and a very heavy heart we announce that the tragic incident yesterday involved one of our own players.

"Jordan of our U9 Bees, tragically passed away yesterday evening doing what he loved.

"Jordan was a shining light and an inspiration to everyone that he met. A strong, determined and courageous young man, who will be missed by everyone.

"The world has truly lost an extraordinary young man, who had done so much good in his community.

"We cannot begin to imagine the grief of the family. Our thoughts, prayers, love and hugs go out to them all and to his teammates, friends and coaches who are devastated by the loss.

"The club will be working with the FA to support the family and anyone touched by this tragedy and ensure they get the help they need.

"At this time, whilst we come to terms with this most devastating loss, we will not be making any further comment.

"Fly High Young Man, Sleep Tight and God Bless."

£29,000 raised so far between the two giving pages RIP lil man.

It's been a fantastic response from the Blackpool public in basically half a day. There isn't a person I know or have been in touch with that hasn't been hugely upset by this cruel act of nature. In fact I was on a Teams meeting this morning with people from various locations in the UK who were asking about what had happened and were saddened by it.

It's a terrible thing to happen and it's certainly made me give my little ones an extra hug over the last 24 hours.

Turns out I know his uncle Danny, we used to play for the same football team (South Shore) when we were kids. His brother took his own life in 2018 and young Jordan had been raising money for mental health charities in his Uncle Reece's memory, from all accounts he was a genuinely lovely kid.

When I finished playing I took my coaching badges and went through the child protection process as I got involved in youth football. My lad was treated probably harsher than other players in our team, but he worked hard and it paid dividends. I wanted him to be better than me (not difficult) and he was flying before he succumbed to osteochondritis dissecans. Wept buckets when he has to pack it in, but honestly don't know how I'd have coped were I to have lost him.
Thoughts are with his family.
RIP little fella.
Sleep tight xx

RIP Jordan - what an inspirational young man he seems to have been.

During lockdown back in January, Lancs Constabulary Officers kept finding sweets and treats left on the windshields of patrol cars in Blackpool, it was a mystery who was doing it, till of course it turns out it was Jordan - they did a feature on him on their Website at the time.

Very moving to see the Tower lit up in bright red for Jordans favourite team Liverpool. Also the arches at the ends of the prom are bright red.

Still can't get my head around this after 24 hours. And hearing more about the lad since it only makes it even more unfathomable. Nothing will ever replace him but it sounds like he won't be forgotten for everything he meant to those closest. Really touching reaction and tributes.

It's probably too early to think about things like this, but given the Critchley connection, could we organise an annual pre-season friendly against Liverpool for the Jordan Banks Trophy? Maybe get other teams involved too? Obviously raising funds for the family and for whatever charities they think appropriate?

Lovely idea @philmus - can the @SLO_BFC pass this on to the club?

I presume there will be some tribute before home game? Hope so.. picture on screen or holding up cards.. just something fitting for the young lad and family. Walking to school today seeing young kids with flowers really is heart breaking

Devastating for his family. Almost unbelievable.
Many years ago, I was playing Cricket on a dank afternoon with a very low cloud cover. Suddenly everyone on the field shouted as their hair stood up on end. We all been struck by sheet lightning.
Scared ? 💀
