Jerry Yates appreciation thread

Seemed to have a lot of critics early on in the season but haven’t seen much praise of him really which is ridiculous considering he’s been a big part of our improvement.

For me, Jerry epitomises everything we’re trying to do at the club. I, like many others thought the clubs general recruitment policy in the summer of looking to league 2 for players ready to make the jump was a good one. I’ve been critical of some of their choices in terms of bringing in players, particularly from the last January window, but players like Yates, CJ and Ekpiteta really look to be good signings.

The most exciting part is there’s still plenty of room for all 3 of these players to improve. But that’s why I support the process the club is trying to embark on. I’ve been a big fan of Yates all season because of his work rate and unselfishness.

Compare him to Hardie and and Nuttall who didn’t hit the heights at all last season. It looked like it could turn out the same for Jerry at the start of the season, but the one key difference is right from the first game you could see this was a player determined to improve and contribute even without his goals. And that’s what he’s done. Watching some of our goals from early in the season, you’ll notice Yates is involved in most of them. Whether it’s a clever run, a nice touch to keep the flow of an attacking move going, or a direct assist, he was constantly showing signs of a player integral to our long term plans.

I’m not saying he’s not had bad games, or missed some chances he should’ve buried, but the fact he came in with all these admirable attributes and has gradually began to supply goals in a more consistent fashion as the season has continued makes him one of my favourite players. Combine this with the fact he’s shown he can score against the big sides in this division, such as Peterborough, Hull (twice), as well as a goal against premier league opposition last weekend, and I think it’s obvious why I think he deserves more credit.

There’s been a lot of talk of how we need another striker in this window, and i agree with that, but I also think that Yates has, so far, delivered on expectations. 9 goals for the campaign now I believe? And as I’ve mentioned, there’s a lot more to his game than just goals.

Plays well alongside Madine. Good job the penny dropped with Critchley otherwise this would be another Sarkic style thread.

Signed to play a false number 9 role in a nothing set up with no service which cancelled him out and just made him look like he wished he was still at Swindon. He struggled with that at Rotherham, which is why he was made available for transfer, so no credit to anyone who thought he could do that when bringing him here. If they actually scouted him for that. A lot better since the Burton game when he was first given a role that's something more in line with what he's capable of. In a two or behind a big man up top is his game and giving him something to work with in the box.

I just wrote a critique of his flaws, then saw it was an appreciation thread. He's a really likable player and I think would be a real favourite if we were there, seeing the blood and thunder and all the off the ball work. I think he's not quite Brett and never will be but he's got some of his attributes and I'm happy with him - I always like it when he scores cos I feel sorry for him when he has those games where he runs himself bow legged and nothing really breaks for him.

Hmm, I see he got a tap in today and has scored a few including penalties but I think he`s still got a lot to prove. So let`s wait and see, the jury`s still out in my view.

To call him "a great player" is definitely a misuse of the word great.

Many world class strikers have, still do, and always will make a career out of scoring ‘tap ins’. You’ve got to be there, in that position to score them. He’s scored a few of them now. His work rate is brilliant and he holds the ball well when it’s given to feet. A lot of the time we don’t play to his strengths and we won’t until we’ve more support from the midfield for him.

A great striker is remembered for his goals.
You never hear people saying "Oh Shearer ran his bollocks off this afternoon, or that was a great assist from Lineker"
Its "Did you see that goal from.........."
I hope Yates improves and I'm sure he will.
At the moment he's thriving in this formation and long may it continue.

One pillock tried to slag Yates off yesterday saying his goal was only a tap in.
I wish he'd score 20 tap ins a season 👍🏻

As a self confessed sceptic when we signed Yates I will take more persuading than some that he will become the kind of effective sufficiently prolific goal scorer that we need.He has so far done reasonably but I would far prioritise efficient and consistent goal scoring and retaining his bollocks over running them off with only marginal effectiveness in front of goal.

Works his arse off, I think he's the sort of forward that is crying out for a crafty no.10 behind him that will reward all his running.

Hopefully once that comes, the goals will cometh even more. You can tell he is a good footballer with some his footwork and passing but I think he's suffering from what the entire team is suffering from at the minute with the lack of creativity going forward.

Shouldn’t he works his bollocks of be a prerequisite of a footballer not a point to praise him on
Yes. But his work rate isn’t the entire point of my post. His work rate has been top notch since the start of the season, but he came under fire for not scoring.

My point is is that even when he’s not scoring hes contributed in other areas of the pitch, he’s adding goals to his game on a more consistent basis. The point about work rate is since Sadler bought the club we’ve been crying out for a player like him that can connect the play well in that area of the pitch, get in behind the lines and put a full shift in for 90 mins. Gnanduillet, as much as I liked him, only added one of those, and Hardie and Nuttall brought absolutely nothing to the table for the most part.

Yates, CJ and Dougall are the standout signings form me, but I don’t see Jerry get the same amount of praise and recognition as the latter two for some reason.

A poacher who can score tap ins is what Blackpool have been missing for years.

9 goals already and we’re not even half way through the season puts him on track to equal Gnanduillet s goal record last season - yet some seem blind to that.

combined with his work rate and link up play, he’s going to be a brilliant asset for us in seasons to come.

Why he and Madine are not the first names on the team sheet will be one of this seasons biggest mysteries.

Both very improved players.

I think we could get the ball into him earlier,or rather into space for him earlier. Good example yesterday was Kaikai had a freekick second half thirty yards out on the left. Yates makes the run, he wants it over the top almost down the line hes on his own free strike at goal but instead kaikai fires it out to the right and straight out for a throw in.

No early balls in from out wide for him all day from either Kaikai or Bez. Grant Ward is seemingly going to be the one that has to drift out there to put the ball in low near post for him. Turton puts them in higher and deeper no good for Yates unless something drops in the penalty box.

Are you 62 in disguise?

I try to remove my tangerine specs before posting on here.I see 3 others liked my opinion.
I would hardly call that a tap in. I presume you havent seen the Facebook clip of him and the defender seconds before the goal? What he had to do to get in that position shows what he is about. Full credit to the guy.

It's amazing what some people can see and others don't. It sometimes reflects the knowledge of the game some have and others don't.

Was amazed that he managed to get away from that Hull player who was trying to wrestle him, a real poacher's goal.

Good job the ref didn't get that single one right and blow for a foul, goal long before penalty 👍

I'm in the middle on the Yates debate. Ridiculous of Critchley to play him as the lone man down the middle. Just not got the requirements needed to do that. Play him alongside the big man or as the wide man and he's much more effective, particularly the first of those options.. In a way he's similar to Brett although a poor mans Brett it has to be said. And players like him are often a firm fans favourite. He's a workhorse who'll run and run and chase lost causes which makes him a great team player. Has he got the quality to play at a higher level? Far from convinced.

I agree the fact he runs around a lot masks the lack of technical ability. Having said that rather that than a Nuttall type who swans around like he’s Cantona.

The guy appears to put a shift in every week so that will do for me.

Funny isn't it because when we had say Brett and Murphs up front you never heard a clamour for another striker.

The strikers aren’t the issue. As a front 2 their goal tally this season is fairly good with very little service.

What we do need is an attacking midfielder with an eye for a forward pass. We also need goals from other areas of the pitch, which just haven’t happened so far this season.

Will just bring this one back 👍👍 I love that man

Tap in 🤣🤣🤣🤣
If Maradona had done that it would go down as one of his greatest goals !!!

I have a vision of Yates hanging naked from the back of the victory parade bus with an intravenous beer drip and the girl in the stripey dress draped over him 😁
