Frank Field

One of the longest ever sitting MP’s he served Birkenhead for 40 years.

He was a great stalwart for the homeless and less well off and backed welfare reform as the saying goes a real man of the people.

Shame MP’s like him are a dying breed these days.

Yes, not overtly philosophical about his politics but practical, very practical. How do you help people...not through a philosophical change to society but here, and now...what works? That was Frank Field.
I’m not sure about that. Pragmatism suggests a readiness to compromise your principles. And Frank Field was absolutely a man of principles that he would never sacrifice.

Some of his principles I agreed with. Some I didn’t. But I certainly admired the man.

The interesting thing for me is he struck up a genuine friendship with Maggie Thatcher, polar opposites but both principled.
