Declares a state of emergency due to COVID. Is now the time for the Uk to help, wether the EU approve or not.

Just did a search for this news, and Reuters, Daily Mail etc are reporting that the state of emergency has been declared in order that the government can introduce new restrictions similar to our lock down measures. Nothing on the BBC site

Apparently a recent spike in cases takes total infections nationally to just under 59,000.
742 people have died in Finland so far in the pandemic.

Like most posters, I'm all for helping other countries, but if these reported figures are correct, I think we need to continue the good work in getting our own house in order beforehand.

Sounds to me like a classical case of the Finnish Government should have been doing things much sooner regarding lockdowns.

If we can help without endangering our own chances, a definite yes. Even as a Brexiter I've always taken the stand when it comes to health and security we should not be divided.

I regularly speak to a couple of Fins for work. Last week, was half term there and many people were going to ski resorts for a few days with all bars and restaurants open.

I assume the EU will stop some of their silly import controls to allow us to do this and stop their childish rubbishing of the efficacy of the AZ vaccine as well?

I haven’t got a problem with helping other countries however, we need to sort our own country first so we ain’t suffering any longer than we have to.

Except South Korea, Singapore, Taiwan, Australia and New Zealand..
Is that the same Australia that the open tennis 2 weeks ago had to suspend crowds for 5 days?
And only Auckland went in to lockdown on Saturday because of an outbreak out of Covid.
Granted they are doing much better than us.
Probably China is doing much better than us but do you believe them?

The point being that they all acted quicker and with tighter controls than us. As for the Tennis. Cases detected (not many btw). Acted quickly. Completely shutdown.. There will be flair ups. It's a virus. The groundwork they put in at the start has at least spared them some of the deaths we've had to contend with.
I didn't mention China!!

Population of Australia 25m 10 x the size of the UK?
Population of New Zealand 5m and roughly same size? as the U.K.?
Countries with a bigger population than us America, Brazil, no doubt China if truth be known far more deaths than us.
Densely populated areas Coincidence they are much worse off?
Oh and yes they did act quicker granted.

Yes, the same Australia and New Zealand who locked down completely because of one case in an official. One case.

Meanwhile we still have hundreds a day dying but think we're done with all that nonsense.

If you read my other comments on populations/land mass I’ve clearly pointed out why the virus spread so much do quickly it’s not rocket science is it?
And yes I’ve always said things should have been done much quicker but hindsight is a wonderful thing.

Location is a big factor too, NZ is about 2,000 km from anywhere, Australia's major cities are similarly isolated.

In practice this means much less international travel to start with thus much easier to close/control the borders, most goods presumably arrive in container ships rather than by road thus another potential route for infection can be tightly controlled.
