European Super League Announcement

Inevitable unfortunately. This was surely the long-term goal of those foreign owners when buying into the 'think they are big' EPL clubs? I reckon the US money men owners of Man U, Liverpool and Arsenal do not give a shit about 'saarker' and only bought these clubs with the goal of making as much wonga as possible. The rabbit is well and truely out of the bag now. I do think though this is posturing to get a bigger share of the UEFA pie and it will materialise in the form of an even more biased ECL with guaranteed participation.

Anyway, whatever happens, or whatever they decide to do, never forget your 'super supporter power' - not to subscribe to watch it or not to spend money on any of the sponsors/companies behind it. We have our community focused club back thanks to Uncle Val and SS and that is all that matters to us. UTMP

Won't happen just a way of the getting even more money.
Easy threaten to leave everyone starts panicking kerching kerching..

I hope their bluff is called.

Expulsion from the English pyramid system, all records expunged (like Wimbledon) and good luck.

Any English player signing up can't play for England.

Set up your franchise, closed shop system and off you go.

It would reignite domestic football for sure.

All those people saying it would never happen...it was inevitable.

The threat from Uefa regarding the banning of players at international level will probably be a relief to some players...and not just those desperate to play for their countries...

Neville is right, this statement at 9.30 tonight will be a huge backtrack, hopefully the reaction will put this nonsense to bed.
No chance. This may get pushed back a bit, but it will drive on.

Money, sadly rules. Then again it rules in L1 too. Why are we in the PO' positions? Cos' sadler spent loads more than the teams that aren't. Remember that when talking about equality and competition.

How can this be called a Super League when their prospective members were only good enough to make up half of this season's Champions League quarter finalists?

This will appeal more to the clubs' global fans than it will to ManYoo or Liverpoo fans in the UK or Real or Barca fans in Spain.
To them, what makes the Champions League special is the fact that they don't play each other every season.
But the armchair fans in Asia or the USA will love this, the mega clubs playing each other 4 times a season.

And that's the next step beyond this - ESL fixtures being played around the world rather than at Old Trafford or the San Siro.
The clubs just become franchises to be sold to the highest bidder, eventually leading to Beijing Red Devils playing Barca Riyadh.

That's completely different though, you can spend money but you're still in a competition with everyone else through the tier system, it's not a closed shop which is the whole point of this proposal, they want everything guaranteed, which it isn't now, regardless of spend. Plenty spend money and achieve little, there's also still an opportunity to achieve on next to nothing, you only have to look at our 2009-2010 season.

This doesn't directly effect us, but we're part of the same structure, so it influences us greatly. The proposals will never happen, even company men like Ferguson have come out against it today while representatives of some big name players have done the same, it's a non starter and these clubs will scurry back in to their holes, it's pie in the sky nonsense from those who don't actually understand the game.

I'm not sure about your claim that Sadler spent loads more than those below us either?

Money invested is not a problem, changing the rules to benefit billionaire (usually American) owners is.
The beauty of football is that the well run clubs can punch above their weight and have a team that is greater than the sum of its parts.
Maybe Arsenal and Tottenham should strive to do that before they start thinking of themselves as some sort of footballing aristocracy that puts itself in a privileged position based on name and reputation rather than results.

In US sport you’ve pretty much got a guaranteed income that you can predict every year. Even when your franchise is utter gash, there is no real punitive damage to the bottom line as they’ve got squad salary caps and only miss out on a small number of matches (NFL play off s for example). Definitely no relegation.....

They want the same in the old world with their new found toys. Guarantee the income, guarantee no relegation and losses and every X years they win something which keeps the fans buying.

A nice small league of teams that the Media will pay cash to every year for screening their matches to the arm chair fans is their total goal, particularly because they didn’t create Amazon so are pissed off they didn’t think of it first.

Elite football lost the plot a while ago. Club ownership in the country is a farce, this proposal is a bridge too far. It'll become the US franchise model, the teams won't really have any connection to the supposed area they are from. Might as well call them team A to L. Money grabbing bastards.

This is exactly what I've been saying would happen for years.

And this is why the Best League in the world can fuck off as well. If it truly was, then why are the so called Big 6 trying to go into another league?

I wouldn't mind but Spurs and Arsenal haven't won anything in years. Swansea and Wigan have won more than Spurs. Are they invited?

Yep, it even goes further in the US where the shit teams get a first round draft pick and like you say, the guaranteed money to fund it.

And when you do really shit you get first dibs on the very best young players in the draft!

Edit : beat me to it Lytham!

Without doing that one team would dominate for a period. Fans sat at home stop watching as it’s predictable so income falls.
It’s barely sport.

When you explain our pyramid to Yanks and they finally get it, they are stunned it exists. In theory you and your mates can still form a club today and in 20 years be in Europe (admittedly along the way you’d need cash to build the stadium etc but it’s still a true pyramid)

I‘d like to think that’s right...it’s only teams from 3 leagues that are involved I hear...England, Italy and Spain

Tell em they’ll get fucked up the wrong in if they do this and squash this nonsense forever

Let's not all jump down the players throats just yet. It's the clubs doing this not the players.
So you think players involved will turn down 1 million pounds a week minimum when it is offered to them and they would have to give up playing for their country? Hmm, there may be a few, but you can bet your bottom dollar that most will be led by greed, if you think otherwise then you must be daft!

It's going to happen, it won't be football as we know it. It will be a razzmatazz for those who crave instant gratification. Let them get on with it. To coin a phrase..... It will be a breath of fresh air when they have gone.

I think what some of you are missing here is that they are reporting these 12 clubs have "signed up" to tis, so presumably they have signed a contract to break away, I don't see how they can get out of it, unless there is a clause?

Other clubs around the world will join it too once it gets going and the whole thing will be a different phenomena to the games as we know it now. New rules, more breaks, it will be utter shite but millions around the world will lap it up as they can then watch and support their teams in any far flung corner of the globe as the teams will play at random grounds. I can see it all.

We will be left with football, real teams, no namby pamby plastic glitz shit. They call it progress!

Except the players won't want to play in it if FIFA ban them, not until they've retired anyway.

i'd like to think it's you who is missing something. Clubs have signed up but the scheme has to get off the ground in the first place. And I'd suggest that the lawyers of these clubs will have covered their backs with various get out clauses such as time lines etc.

They talked of banning players when the PL was originally mentioned but in the end the FA and FL buckled.

Money talks and it runs football with players/agents holding all the cards, and the national associations do ok from TV revenues too.

Except the PL was still governed by UEFA and ultimately FIFA, they'll never sanction a league they have no power over, money talks but power always shouts louder.

Let's look at this objectively --- what's in it for us? 😄

There's talk of the six traitor PL clubs being kicked out of the leagues. To replace them the top six Championship clubs would be promoted.

To replace them, the top six League 1 clubs would be promoted to the Championship, and so on. If that's true I'm in favour of it.

This could be the shake-up English football needs to get back to Peoples' Football.

But everything changes doesn’t it? Who could ever imagine Apartheid ending, the Berlin Wall collapsing, the UK leaving the EU etc.

One day there will be a Euro Wide Super League just as well as their will be a World League - and in all probability, a Galactic League!

Everything changes given enough time!

No of course they wont sanction it but the threats to the PL in (around 1990 when it was first mooted) was of not giving it the nod.

Haalands agent is currently trying to negotiate the first million pound per week contract, so the top earners need funding and it has to come from somewhere. Not a chance that the 'Top 6' will turn down mega bucks offers and FIFA (with UEFA skulking behind) will no option but to sanction it.

Reminds me a bit of how the NFL evolved where franchises moved around from city to city, and that seem far fetched in the States at the time.

Are you running for Blackpool council 😮😬

Depends how the finances play out and what TV money is available, but the Championship needs to alter drastically so that medium sized clubs can compete.

Absolutely and at some point ManUre will be playing Barcelona in a ESL match in Japan, televised back to England at 9am* on a Saturday morning.
Who'd have thought we'd be seeing NFL matches played at Wembley and -as scheduled- White Hart Lane etc.

*havent checked the timeline but you catch the drift.

Quite hilarious to consider this may well be an attempt to make UEFA fall in line with their demands, and it has just ended up being a huge PR disaster for all these clubs.

Not everything...PNE will still be stalled in the EFL and never get anywhere.
