Blackpool v Hull City Official Matchnight Thread 15.12.20

Tough game, hope we have our shooting boots on and brains focused as well and the winner goes in off Gary Madine's rear !!

How we cope at set pieces is key for me . They are a big side and we just seem to struggle with any ball out in there:

I think that's one area we've really improved to be fair. Marv and the Viking have kept numerous clean sheets to be fair to them.

It's the other end of the pitch where we need to be more clinical, we could and should be 5-6 more points better off.

Looking forward to tonight. I'd expect another tight game. A touch of fortune in our direction and we win. It will be down to fine margins.*

* enough cliches, thank you - Ed

We spoke to Big Ben Burgess about tonight’s game as well as his career in which he played for both teams.

Ben is on ifollow commentary tonight if you listen to the home audio.

Our chat with him was hilarious and well worth a listen - let us know what you think!

That's a great listen thanks. Well worth checking out,Big Ben doesn't hold back in talking about all the managers he has worked under! And some of his playing colleagues too. Very candid....

I'd be happy to start with any of the squads mentioned but with head in rotation mode I wouldn't be surprised to see Turton, Garbutt, Robson and Yates rested for the Oxford game given a start.
If that is part of Critchley’s thinking we can expect something close to:
Maxwell
Turton, Ekpiteta, Gretarsson, Garbutt
Hamilton, Robson, Dougall, Kaikai
Madine, Yates.
He may decide, however, to rest Kaikai and go with someone like Anderson, Kemp or Lubala.

Or he could replace KaiKai with Garbutt, and retain Husband? I don't think he will but i'd love to see Garbutt pushed forward more, supplying more than defending.

I think a hard fought draw, they are not in a false position, they have got there by winning points, it's what happens in football.

Need Yates and the Goal Machine playing well, CJ and Kaikai need to be on it tonight. Big Marv and Grettarson pairing for me, Ballard sub if he's fit. Robson Dougall getting to 'em.

That's a decent option ...I want to see Garbutt in some capacity for tonight's game for his experience and quality with set pieces.
That wouldn't be a decision based on form though. Husband has been playing well lately and hopefully has put the red card fiascos behind him.
It also wouldn't surprise me if Kaikai started on the bench. In addition to the other options mentioned there's also Mitchell who is more than capable of playing in a more forward role on the left.
It's not a bad problem to have being spoilt for choice.

Taken from the BBC report on Hull's defeat against Shrewsbury on Saturday "Though the hosts marginally improved after the restart, Shrewsbury's efficient high-pressing game left City frustrated and short of inspiration." So NC may rest Madine/KaiKai and start with Yates/Andersen/Woodburn/CJ. I would like to see Woodburn in a more forward role and told to get in the penalty area with Yates at every opportunity.

If we are going to do anything this season we need to turn superiority in matches into points and as Kurt says that means being more effective in front of goal.

The main issue with Woodburn is his lack of goals, just 2 in 40 appearances!

I agree but before we bin him off back to Liverpool I would just like to see him play up alongside Yates as an out and out striker. We are overloaded with players who want to play the no.10 role or play wide.

Hull seem to be the standout side at the moment in this division, so its a good test of where we are. personally no idea what the outcome will be. based on saturday being a bit helter skelter a hard won draw, or based on the game against portsmouth and to a great extent peterborough with maybe a bit more clinicality (????) or just luck in front of goal, possibly giving hull a bit of a doing.

No home grown player?

No Madine.
No Ward

Hull have won 11 of their 16 league games so far, which is pretty good going. 5 teams have come away with something though, and 4 of those beat them. We can beat any side in the division if we are on our game.

I'm very surprised Turton starts purely because of Gabriel's performance on Saturday, but......

I think he's definitely rotating the team to keep them fresh. Let's not forget he sees them every day in training; we have no idea what condition they are in after playing through this relentless run of games. The last thing we want is for them to start dropping like flies from muscle injuries.

We need Kai Kai to step up massively and be at his dangerous best ...cant afford passengers...hope Garbutt has a stormer and plays some great set pieces

I hope it works out for us and maybe against the better teams it makes us more solid? I just prefer the Madine / Yates combo as it delivered a ruck of points with Kaikai left and CJ right.
In Critch we trust....

Don’t understand Ward not playing, looked really good on Saturday. Looks like he’s looking to stop them playing and use pace on the break
