Purely a culture difference. The ladies at the Chinese Health and Wellbeing salon I regularly visit often go to give me an anal swab. If you politely decline, they understand and leave the area alone for the remainder of the session. It's commonplace in the Lower Yangtze industrial region and the locals don't bat (excuse the pun) an eyelid.

My lads going teaching over there as soon as this shit’s sorted.
Had everything lined up with just a few weeks to go, then all this broke out.
 
I’ve only been for work and never got to be a tourist unfortunately. Fair to say as much as I’d love to see some of the ancient temples and cultural sites, I don’t fancy subjecting my lungs to their cities....
 
Depends which part- some amazing places, some I’d never visit again.
you could just go to Hong Kong, Taiwan etc and get the best of both worlds.
 
I wonder when Wuhan Market will become a tourist hotspot....1, 5, 20 years?? It will happen at some point methinks.
 
Myanmar is on my A list if they can get rid of those military arseholes. Some of the few pristine forest habitats left in the world. Could be a long wait sadly.....

My lad was teaching out there when all this started, just like your lad was about to go back out there. Had visa, and negative covid result and China pulled the plug on all UK flights 24hrs before he was due to go.
Luckily he's managed to continue teaching on line so still getting a few quid. But he's desperate to get back out there and the schools desperate to get the teachers back. Good luck to your lad.

I take it your lad would recommend it, then?
Mine has been promised a position as soon as it’s possible.
I saw a tourist info type video of the area he’s going to and it looks amazing.
 
He absolutely loves it. His standard of living is fantastic and the experience brilliant. Just makes me wish I was young and had the opportunity to do something like that. If your lad likes it half as much as mine does then he's in for a great time out there.
 
They clearly had the one and only meal we had in China( a day visit from Hong Kong) giving rise to a clutched buttocks moment.....actually in truth the meal ( a so called banquet) we had was truly awful but because it was well awful....needed a lot more garlic to help it along😉

I was due to go out to Shenzhen, in Guangdong province (just north of Hong Kong) for an extended work posting early last summer, but the Covid kiboshed that.
