Anglo Italian Cup 1971

A great win for the Seasiders and I remember watching it somewhere with the old man on a black and white telly.

Always wondered why teams like Bayern Munich and Real Madrid never made the final- can't have been much good then I suppose.

I hadn't realised that Swindon were awarded the trophy in 1970 after the match was abandoned due to crowd violence. Good old days.

Swindon got in because third tier teams couldn't enter the Fairs Cup which they'd qualified for by winning the League Cup

Aah, the Lanerossi days. Think that was 72.
10th June. My grandad got married that day and the whole tangerine mad family were stuck in the River Wyre Hotel when history was being made ☹️. When we asked a waiter the result we thought he was having us on, so me, aunt and cousin left the reception to the get The Green. Lo and behold, it really was 10 nil.

I remember being on the 10-0 game, they even subbed their keeper I seem to remember. And oh......what a finish from Mickey Burns 😍

Three memories of that tournament.
1. Suddick's wonder goal, in the 10-0 Lanerossi game, sadly not recorded for posterity.
2. Being both overjoyed at the final being televised live from Italy by the BBC, a big deal in those days, and infuriated when they went straight back to the Saturday night schedule after 90 minutes and didn't show the all important extra time.
3. The civic reception outside the town hall on the following Monday after the final with hundreds of supporters in attendance many of whom, including me, adjourned to Jenks's Bar ( Rumours) afterwards.

Suddick goal wasn't in that match. It was in the 3-3 draw with Verona.

Thanks for that...I did wonder when typing and should have checked it out first.
Apologies.
No worries, it was such a long time ago and it's natural to think it could have been in that game because it was such a high scoring game and gets recalled on here more than the Verona game in which he did score it.

Getting on a bit now, but seem to remember the King taking a rest by sitting on the ball during one game. Was it in the Anglo-Italian, or a league game?

Can't help with that. Yep, recall it being it being talked about but can't recall any details of against who or when. Purely a guess but I'd doubt he'd do that in something like a league game so the Anglo Italian is a reasonable shout.

My brother, Michael, went to Bologna and saw the win. I was at school so couldn't go. I did however manage to get to Roma the following year. Not a bad record in Europe when we have been given the chance.

My first memories of ever watching BFC on television 🧡 .... only 5 years old 🤣

Check out the link - ca anyone help explain the points system and why we topped our group - was it linked to goals scored ? 🤷‍♂️

I'm late to this, but I've explained it in my new book. Basically it was for goals scored and offside only in the area. Rules changed for the next two seasons too. Craziest competition ever invented.

Yes I remember offside in 18yards of goal only think that would be a great rule to bring into EFL games would bring the entertainment back to the game

Same rule applies in the Watney Cup.
