Alnwick - bullet dodged

Didn’t want to be a number 2 which is why he went to Saint Mirren aka didn’t want to fight for his place. Awful attitude. Sod him

Tbh I kind of get it. He wants to be in the games. And if this opportunity gives him the chance to be number 1 without having to fight, then good luck to him. If he signed for us, he could have spent majority of the season sat on the bench.

Fight for his place this is third division football with players on 2/3k a week why would he at his age sit on a bench when he can go to a club as a number 1.

And how exactly does a goalkeeper fight for his place in the first place not your best wind up Athers.

Not a wind up. Rather have players up for the fight to prove they’re the best. Chose the safe option

I can empathise with him. It's tough being a keeper if your not the automatic first choice, as you're always waiting for the number one to get injured or have a nightmare game - which isn't usually that often. It's not as if there are regular reserve games to keep you on your toes either.
Good luck to him and thanks for wearing our shirt.

How is it a safe option, St Mirrens number 1 has left he is guaranteed to start and live in a part of the world he already has or sit on the bench if your lucky(Simms homegrown normally get the nod) at a third division club waiting for Maxwell to get injured or sent off.

Good luck to the lad made the correct decision.

Must admit i'm disappointed. I personally think Ainwick is the better GK but obviously it was Maxwell who was able to demonstrate his ability to Critchley whereas Ainwick maybe wasn't (or maybe I know nothing and Maxwell is obviously far better).

I would have liked 2 top GK's battling it out for No.1 but I can certainly understand why Ainwick made the choice he has. A solid season in the SPL could get him a move back to one the 'big' 2 in the SPL, a cushy contract in the Championship or even a nice contract at a Hearts, Hibs or Abderdeen etc.

Now i'm interested in what our next move is. I think a lot will come down to Sims and his mentality and what Critchley think's he's capable of. If he's happy on the bench waiting for his chance then that's great and makes the most sense financially- especially so if Critch rates him. If he needs game time to develop then it becomes tricky as you either a) bring someone in who's ultimately ahead of him in the squad (and you need to find away to fulfil the homegrown rule each week) or b) find a GK willing to spend a season on loan as No.2( and you still need to find away to fulfil the homegrown rule each week) . Either way Maxwell is nailed on as our No. 1 for the next season or two and Critch seems to agree going off of his comments - and that's not a bad thing tbf.

Haha the old “didn’t want him anyway” when players leave/don’t sign. Wiz and Baz are usually good at this.

OK, goalkeepers normally have longer careers than most outfield players. What is he 27/29?
I can see his point, also he's going to St Mirren so, although it's SPL, it's not one of the top teams.
I wish him well.
Always followed St Mirren (The Buddies) as my best mate in the army came from Paisley.

Can anyone remind me which keeper, when dropped, said he never wanted to play for Blackpool again, but finished up as No1.

Clue: 5 letter surname.

He looked decent enough to me.
There were obviously other factors but losing him through injury coincided with our season taking a nosedive.
I wish him well.. being No 2 can't be much fun for a keeper.

Don’t blame the guy one bit,he’s guaranteed 1st team football which he should of been guaranteed here.
I don’t mind maxwell but personally not getting Alnwick tied down is a mistake on the clubs part, very good keeper who shouldn’t be needing to challenge somebody who he’s clearly better than for a number 1 spot in a league one team.
All the best to him.

Interesting opinion Athers.
I'm not saying you are wrong, but if he signed and then said 'Ive come here knowing I'm going to be number 2' would you then criticise him for coming to pick up a salary for sitting on the bench?

Personally I'm gutted he didn't sign, but also glad he has gone to a club where he can get games as I think he is a cracking keeper.

Alnwick was good but think Maxwell is slightly better. I'm hoping we sign a tall commanding GK to be honest and have him and Maxwell fight for the #1 spot

What an absolute load of crap Athers. I spoke to his girlfriend 3 weeks ago and she told me it was a purely financial decision. He loved his time down here but was offered a lot more at St Mirren than he was here. Good luck to him in my opinion 👍🏼
