Forever in a rebuild…(long post)

So the retained list is out. No shocks to be fair, can’t see Husband staying as he’s 30 and this could be one last payday opportunity. A strong character who ended the season as our captain. Marv gone, not a shock but that’s 2 of our starting back 3. Add to that, we’ve lost a midfield starter in Byers who made a big difference and alongside Husband was the only other one who gave the opposition or the ref any shit. That’s another strong character gone. Don’t see much personality or aggro in this team which you need in League 1. A team of nice soft arses now. We’ve lost the magic man Dembele who carried us creativity wise. Our natural left wing-back Coulson (still not sure on him) back to his parent club. We’ve also lost the super impact sub Matty Virtue who we utilised instead of a forward every game due to his goalscoring prowess. 6 of the match-day squad v Reading gone. Add to this Lavery, but he never plays more than 20 games a season so no massive loss. Rhodes a great penalty box striker but not so good if you don’t get the ball in the penalty box. Jake Beesley, who should be our 4th choice striker option with Kouassi the 5th and maybe a loan out. CJ Hamilton is never going to be the answer at RWB (but we gave him 2 years+ for some bizarre reason). His competition in Gabriel looks like he’s off unless his bird did refer to just moving house in a transfer window…

On the plus side Robbie Apter returns from a fantastic loan to no doubt be shoe-horned into a position he’s never played before in his life that lessens his ability and will have half our fans saying he’s shit. Dom Thompson is back too, whose elite concentration levels helped relegate Forest Green to non-league.

The rebuild starts now. We’re looking at 5-6 players to go in the starting 11. We’ll need another 4-5 to make up the squad. So we’re signing 10 players or more for the 1st team squad.

We can pad the squad with youth players but we’ll just have to make sure it’s “fair on them” so if you’re a young striker in good form at development level, don’t expect to come on if you’re on the bench if we are losing and we need goals. Professional football is all about being “fair” you see and not trying to score goals for our Head Coach seemingly… you need balls to back young players. Just feels like if Critchley was at Dortmund when Jude Bellingham turned up he would have gave him 20 mins last match of the season & said he’s not quite there yet or if was Luke Littler’s dad he wouldn’t let him turn pro till he was 21 so it was safer & fair, maybe enter a comp at the local social club.

We can talk about appointing Critchley to stabilise us after the shitshow under Appleton and Thick Mick & all that but a rebuild should take a season max where you see the identity and the plan and you add a couple in to make it grow. I’ve not seen that from us under NC, but even if I had, we’re now going to have to change half the squad. This is not ideal. I’m also thinking he’s not that guy to be able to pull it off. Don’t see he’s got the balls for it. A pure wet lettuce. Hope I’m wrong.

Don’t fall for the narrative that we’re little old Blackpool & it’s a consolidation season and we should be grateful it’s not the Oyston’s and it can’t be done without spending £££, because it CAN be done. Kieron McKenna at Ipswich. No doubt they are a bigger club than us but they’ve spent 4.7million in the past 2 seasons. Great loan deals to add to their squad, clear philosophy & playing style, extremely well coached with full buy-in from players and fans because you can see it makes sense & they all believe in it. Back to back promotions. Unbelievable achievement for McKenna. We did it under Ollie. Luton have done it.

No doubts they’re paying decent wages but it can be done. We only need one promotion for now and don’t forget we’ve made 6million in player sales in the last couple of years.

Rebuild is just a term used to get gullible fans to let the team be shit for longer and get away with it.

A rebuild comes from a neglection of a squad in the first place. Trying cheaper options that dont work and having to replace them (let’s see how he integrates Finnegan and Sassi our play-off push signings in January when our rivals were splashing cash) & a huge emphasis on loan players (we’ve done that for two seasons). In the meantime the few good players you do have, have enough and want to move on like Bowler and Yates. I think there will be interest in Grimshaw and Gabriel in the summer too, which is fine if we are reinvesting properly into the squad.

We just don’t get the Bishop’s, Brannagan’s, Moxon’s or the Joe Low’s over the line £££. Which means when you sell your best players, if you don’t reinvest back into signing proper players you won’t have much to sell on again. Brentford model was it we were trying to copy? What happened?

I have zero knowledge about the Hong Kong stuff with Sadler but if it’s on top for him, he may as well have a big blow-out this summer and see where it takes us. Call it player trading. Gotta be better than them taking his dough off him, even if it is trusting Critchley with some money after he agreed to giving CJ 2 more years. Every day I think about that. WTF were we thinking?!

If we don’t have a clear plan this summer, it could end up a never ending circle, forever in a rebuild. Pot the manager, rebuild. Bring his players in, rebuild. Loads of players move. Rebuild. Pot him, rebuild…

All this whilst we’ve allegedly got this all singing all dancing infrastructure at the club to ensure we are always primed and prepped and ready to go, all being handsomely well paid for it too… I think I’d rather spend it on actual footballers than pen pushers.

Interesting summer ahead…

You will upset a few on here by talking common sense.we have way too many fans who are easily pleased and still see us as little old Blackpool who should be up and down between league 1 and league 2 ..I guess you and I will be described as entitled for wanting what is best for the club. As I have said before I am a Blackpool fan and not a Simon Sadler or Neil Critchley fan although I want them to do well so the club does well. They talk of an exciting summer of recruitment ahead and that statement must be under the microscope and scrutinised starting now. We need to recruit early and get some quality in instead of going last minute .com and picking up all the dross nobody else wants. We should at least make an effort to sign the loan players from last year and that should/ must be done NOW.

There's a couple of things that really concern me.

1 - Recruitment strategy - What is it? Are we signing the younger kids with a view to giving them game time? Moffat? Emmerson? Sassi? Finnegan? Or are we trying to sign Brannigans of this world? We loaned Rhodes who is 36. What's the strategy? What are we trying to do?

2 - What is the clubs 5 year plan? Where do we want to be in five years?

I'd say that you'd expect that to be cloudy from the outside but I'd hazard a guess it's cloudy from the inside either.

Leadership at the club need to stand up this summer and get their arses into the public eye and start driving positivity around Blackpool FC.

Good post and I've got absolutely no confidence in the club getting it right or in Critchley who won't be going anywhere

I could be surprised but we look soft as sh!t from top to bottom and the current squad looks garbage

Just had a 100 quid bet with a Wrexham fan that we will finish higher than them, i may as well pay him now it looks like Critchley is staying

I think your, "don't fall for the narrative..." paragraph is your strongest point.

Like you said, it can be done on a small budget as long as the recruitment is spot on. Brentford, Bournemouth, Brighton and Luton all great examples of the models we SHOULD follow. However, our recruitment for the last 3 years has been poor. Overpaying for average players and selling them on for a loss like Owen Dale and Callum Wright (and probably JLG). I don't think we've made a good value for money signing since Yates which was back in 2020! Who is in charge of recruitment? They need binning off and replacing with me! 🤓 There's enough quality players out there to build a promotion worthy squad for peanuts.

The cost of the players needed will prevent any true rebuild, as in preparing the grounds for the next couple of seasons.

I can't see Critchley attracting the range of personalities needed either.

We'll bring in players to ensure a top 10 finish, but not really up there with the promotion chasers.

Wrote in another post that it's not who we've got rid of, it's who we've kept!
For me, Beesley, CJ, Kouassi, Joseph, Lyons, Norburn and Thompson would have also been shown the door!!

Bloody wild bet that Phil!

Ipswich is a much bigger club than Blackpool. Fill a 29k stadium every home game. But yes, they are being run incredibly effectively. They can no doubt afford and attract better people at all levels though.

With players on two year deals and freedom of contract, every team in the land is in the same state of flux. This isn't unique to Blackpool.

When we do give players longer contracts, the fans are up in arms 😉🤣

The ‘plan’ has gone to complete shite since we got in the Championship and realised how much it costs to stay there coupled with Critchley leaving.

Since then it’s back of a fag packet stuff. We’ve tried our hand in dabbling at picking up other teams young talents but it’s not worked in 2 years.

Agreed but why should we wait at the back of the queue…how about we recruit properly and early instead of watching other teams have first pick..I’m not expecting premiership players just players that have been scouted identified and shortlisted. The current recruitment policies regarding permanent signings simply are not working. I will say that the loans were very good last season and we would have been bottom half without them but we need some quality players that are actually ours.

Yep, doesn’t look great if this ends up being our front line

Couldn't be arsed reading all the OP. Soz A_K...

Definitely agree on the points re recruitment and getting it right in terms of a common vision of trying to maintain a 'build from the bottom up' approach. I don't expect us to chuck huge amounts of cash at players, but it really doesn't look like we've spent money wisely over the last couple of seasons and it hasn't got us very far.

All the tiers in the EFL work (broadly) in the same way. Each league has the odd team that runs away with it, while 70% of clubs are separated by a midge's cock in terms in terms of their squad ability. Unless you have a budget that will truly blow away the competition, having a coherent and simple plan is miles more effective than trying to be overly clever and covering a multitude of sins.

Hladky - Salford
Tuanzebe - Free
Woolfenden - Academy
Burgess - Accrington Stanley
Davis - Leeds
Burns - Fleetwood
Morsy - Middlesbrough
Luongo - Free
Chaplin - Barnsley
Hutchinson - Chelsea (Loan)
Hirst - Leicester

Your best ever post. Well done you. Says all that needs to be said.

Agreed. We have this recruitment team under Winter and Downes. Let's see what they have got. (Contracts are normally from June, so I don't expect much for a couple of weeks).

Hope he gave you odds 🤣

I’d agree 4-5 - two defenders, a midfielder and two strikers minimum.
Apter and Finnigan make next season interesting from two players we’ve yet to see in tangerine. Also get in a nasty bastard talented captain.

Bloody wild bet that Phil!

Ipswich is a much bigger club than Blackpool. Fill a 29k stadium every home game. But yes, they are being run incredibly effectively. They can no doubt afford and attract better people at all levels though.
They do fill their stadium, but the population of Ipswich is smaller than Blackpool. Yes, they have a huge rural area to add to the town, but then so do Blackpool - the whole Fylde and up to Lancaster.
BFC needs to go on a charm offensive - encouraging people to support BFC and have a Prem team if they want.
Get them supporting two clubs, but watching the Pool live, and pretty quickly their Prem team will become their second club.
Like many, I'm unconvinced that NC, second time around, is the guy to do it for us - but here's hoping.

We do desperately need *something* from the club, even if it's just a statement of intent but on all fronts it's just a bit wet lettuce.

Interesting comparison to Ipswich and I understand they're a "bigger club" blah blah but it's the defeatist attitude that gets me. We can be a championship club averaging 16-18 thousand a week and sometimes competing in the top half, I'm sure of it, but the ambition has never been there, even now with indications of a 4.5k east stand.

Big summer anyway, will tell us a lot about where we stand and how much or little the owners current predicament will effect things.
