Pool signings you thought would turn out better?

There’s been quite a few signings over the years who I personally thought would be way better than they actually turned out.

From previous years, the first one that comes to mind is Nathan Delfouneso. When we signed him on loan, we’d started the season brilliantly and he had Matt Phillips and Tom Ince either side of him. Thought it was a match made in heaven.

I also remember thinking we’d hit the jackpot signing Steven Davies and a Michael Chopra in the same window. I was well off on that one.

More recently, Joe Nuttall is an obvious one. I also remember being excited about Ben Woodburn. Both never really offered much.

Who was that South American wonderkid we signed 6 or 8 years ago - touted as the new Messi. Saw him do a Cruyff turn at Burnley in about the only game he played. Then he vanished.

Davies was the main one. Thought we'd signed at least 15 goals guaranteed. We hadn't. We'd signed a fat bloke.

More recently I thought Ethan Robson was the most promising of that initial flurry of Critch signings which included Yates, Marv, CJ etc. Not given up on him yet but I thought he'd be a first team regular.

I thought Sarkic would be a brilliant signing. Great pedigree at top European clubs, on the fringes of his national team, a good age to develop, highly rated and tracked by Critch even whilst at Liverpool and coming in on the back of a good season at Burton. But he’s been disappointing and he’s had plenty of opportunities to impress.

Ted McDo(n't)ugall & Willie Morgan didn't live up to the top player status.
Eric Nixon was supposed to get us over the promotion line.
Gordon Owen always played well against us.

Ben Woodburn.
Mike Summerbee

Who was Beckhams friend and in that star studded youth team who signed for us.

Edit. Just remembered it was Ben Thornley.

Summerbee was at the veteran stage when he signed. He tried but his legs had gone.
Correct, Trammo…I remember all the fans around me vs Derby in the cup saying: watch this fella, lad, he’s magic…but being distinctly disappointed when he actually played.

Who was that England u21 international centre half we signed from Stockport under Colin Hendry?,he is that vague I've forgotten his name.

Wasn’t he misdiagnosed with a particular injury that massively impacted recovery?

I don't know, he was certainly out for the last 10 games of 2013/14 and missed 3/4 months at the start of the next season so it wouldn't surprise me.

I always thought he just got so fed up with the whole mess the club was that he stopped trying.

So similar to secondhand car sales cons. One careful owner, great heritage, proven quality. So many clubs adept at off loading dwindling talent. Who are masters of it?? Surely Arsenal - who offload big names just at the right time before anyone knows they're finished ... recent examples Thierry Henry, Alexis Sanchez, Aaron Ramsey.

Iwobi. Useless at Everton. 5 yr deal worth 18 million. Laughing all the way to the bank.

Although he was better than Malkin, I remember having higher hopes for Andy Preece, his signing was probably the second most hyped up of the 90s, behind Tony Ellis but my abiding memory of him is flailing around in the box in a whirl of dreadlocks with the mobility of an injured horse.
