Blackpool v Coventry City Official Matchnight Thread 17.08.21

Yep looking forward to this one, just pick the right team, think front foot first, defend 2nd half if need be, get some momentum…..

play our best team. last season in div 1 we were able to interchange players, without any noticeable difference in the overall performance of the team, this season the Championship is such a huge difference in class that we will not be able to do this, against Cardiff, and Bristol, (until the late substitutions) this tactic was found badly wanting, if we recognise and play our best eleven players regularly, ( not withstanding injury) we will be ok, and may even be pushing for top six,

Bottom 6, avoiding relegation hopefully. I don't see several of our summer signings and some of last season's players prospering in this league.
Bowler and Lavery deserve to start and Ekpiteta should be in too. Critchley needs to select his best in form players so that we can compete.

62 yrs and count said "I don't see several of our summer signings and some of last season's players prospering in this league."

it may be that because of the much higher standard of Championship footy, that some of our lads need to be eased into the division, from the bench, in order to get up to speed, used to the higher pace of things

We need to show that we deserve to be in this division. Saturday gave the impression that we don't. We need Coventry to be our declaration of status. Up the Pool!

Coventry won’t be push overs - O’Hare for them is is a great player whilst they’ve Waghorn as well - we’re going to have to compete well in midfield so they don’t boss us as they have some strength there.

Finally some actual sense comes from 62! Well done sir.

I hope, judging by NCs recent comments about not being able to play the same players constantly that we will be seeing a team more like the one that did Middlesbrough over midweek.

I'm never afraid to express an opinion or to respond to deliberate baiting. Up the Pool.

Mix it up a little bit tonight, centre of defence terrifies me without Viking.

Maxwell
Connolly Ekpiteta Keogh Garbutt
Dougall James
Bowler Carey Lavery
Yates

Really hope we pick up a win here more than usual, no win tonight and we head to Bournemouth away looking for our first win of the season which is one of the toughest fixtures we'll play all year.

I said we'd get off to a slow start but don't want to see us in a real rut with no wins for a run. A win tonight would relieve some pressure with some real tough fixtures coming up (Bournemouth away, Millwall away, Fulham home)

Loving the higher standard, did anybody really think we wouldn't struggle, we have moved massively in the right direction on and off the pitch, in some ways we need to catch ourselves up. We need to past it far better in terms of sharpness and speed that is how you get road the big physical sides that litter this division. I would have had Marv in versus Cardiff as we new how big they are. But NC knows best for me. Enjoy the ride cannot wait to get the TTV on later!!

Judging by the difference between Middlesbrough and Cardiff games, NC doesn’t always know best. And by his own admission he got it wrong against Cardiff, changes in formation and personnel needed tonight.

It's crazy isn't it, after the Cardiff game I looked at the fixtures to see when our next "easy game" is. It reminded me of Holloway's joke about when they claimed we'd only get 11 points and he said something along the lines of "I couldn't believe it when they said we'd only get 11 points, then I looked at the fixtures and I thought bloody hell, where we gonna get 11 points from here?"

Obviously it's not as bad as that season but there will be no easy games, it'll be a challenging season where we have to fight tooth and nail for every point earned. Looking forward to it, it makes every win feel better

Agree 100% 👍

The main difference was that Boro played a young reserve side and sat off us. Gave us a false sense of security.

yep, excellent post. It's all right trying to play [safe] possession football but there has to be some sort of end product. Need to do it at a higher tempo as you say. All this slow sideways possession football along the back four is doing is frustrating our forward players who are trying to make runs both forwards, sideways and dropping a bit deeper but way more often than not the ball just isn't played forward. Needless to say we also have to have that midfield player in space and wanting the ball too.

The Sky Blues will have one of the lower budgets in the division this season. Nevertheless, this time last year, Coventry forked out £1.35m for Gustavo Hamer, a defensive midfielder from Dutch side PEC Zwolle.

In the last year alone, they have also dished out fees for Ben Sheaf, Viktor Gyökeres, Marcel Hibner, Jay McGrath, Tyler Walker, Josh Reid and Favio Tavares.

During this window, Ian Maatsen and Jake Clarke-Salter have both arrived on loan from Chelsea.

Pool boss Critchley said: “Not to go on about finances, but they have spent a little bit of money on players. They’ve recruited but they’ve done it sensibly, within their means.

"Mark has done a great job there, he really has. I suppose, if you’re looking at teams we can compete with or put yourself on a par with, Coventry would be somewhere near that.

“Again, if you look at some of the money they’ve spent on certain players, it’s still a big club.

“I went to the Coventry v Nottingham Forest game last week and there were nearly 21,000 there, so we’re competing against big clubs with big resources.

The Seasiders can expect a completely different test tonight to that faced against Mick McCarthy’s Cardiff City team at the weekend.

Critchley’s side struggled to deal with the Bluebirds’ aerial bombardment during their 2-0 defeat.

“They’re a different team to Cardiff,” Critchley said of Coventry. “They have been building for the last few years.

"Every game in this division will be tough, but I’ve seen enough in us over the last two games to know we’ll be competitive.

Good side these, speaking with a cov fan today, reckons they will beat us. Hope we have a right good go At them.

It did, but success breeds confidence. A similar line up with a couple of tweeks may have made the difference. Instead of playing the majority of the old guard, who start to think they only have to turn up to be selected.

Yeah I was surprised that he left CJ in the team from the week before, at least. Would be amazed if he starts tonight. And I would expect Lavery to start. Bowler and lavery in for J-J and CJ.

I also think Ekpiteta and Gretarsson or Casey will replace Keogh and Hubby sooner rather than later.

I reckon it will be a draw, I'm just hoping we don't have a repeat performance of our forwards making runs and the defence passing it back to Maxwell. And like Voyeur just said, the ref was useless..

We haven't had much time to work on things from Saturday....

But it will be a very different game. Not sure what Critch will do, stick or twist.

Glad the games come thick and fast. A big chance to put Saturday to bed and push on. Ultimately a 'win, lose, draw' scenario from each 3 games will mean objectives are achieved for the season.

There are many standards of ref and many are only poor or average, hopefully getting better as we move up the leagues however the constant whinging on here tires me , the endless criticisms which are predictable and always at their peak when we lose.

Sometimes the poorer decisions favour us sometimes not but according to many moaners on here they never do or only the ones that go against us are mentioned with the exception of a few more balanced posters, credit to them .

Just accept refs decisions for what they are. They will likely even out over the whole season.

Obviously Cardiff are a higher standard than the physical, long ball teams in League 1but I thought they were worse to watch than any team I saw play in our division last season.
Never engaged in a period of passing the ball themselves, if we got forward with the ball they would either do the little technical fouls or just scythe our players down if necessary!
All about long throws and set pieces and never letting the game flow, all teams entitled to play however they see fit but I begrudge saying they were a higher standard.
I'll give them a higher standard of shit housery! Didn't think Bristol City were very good either and if we had more of our players available I think we could have beaten them.

The ref on Saturday suited Cardiff, it wasn't missing the possible handball that would've given us a penalty, or not giving a red when our man was dangerously and cynically chopped down when he got ahead of them, it was his general management of the game that was the problem, massively favoured Cardiff and allowed them to thrive with anti-football.
It's also been proven that incorrect referee decisions don't even out they massively favour the bigger clubs.

It is fair to say that when we were in the Prem. some survey was carried out that on balance poor decisions overall cost us I think it was 5 points although the one team that lost more points than us was I seem to remember a much bigger club.
