Haven't had an ITK thread for some time - Well here's one

One of my clients is a very highly regarded medical research scientist at the top of their field. I was speaking with them this afternoon and a cure for this is not going to be for longer than we think. We are also likely to be in lockdown for many more weeks yet although some work places will start to open again.

They also said that this virus is going to change the way we live and the way the world is forever and social distancing could e with us for 2 or more years.

This are not my thoughts, these are from someone who is very involved in this.

So anyone thinking it is a good idea to go and have a run out this weekend or gather in groups, have parties and flout the advice then they are putting the NHS at massive risk of being over run and be responsible of many deaths. People having parties, people licking their hands and picking up food stuffs and handles in a supermarket. WTF is wrong with some people? Sheesh!!

It's hard to actually comprehend it when it is actually happening around you, but this is as big a thing as a world war, possibly even greater and I thought that suggestion was bull shit 4 weeks ago.

Take care everyone we are in for the long haul. 😟
 
Herts, thanks for that cheery contribution.

However a specialist in these things said much the same on the news and hour or two ago. Let's just hope they are both wrong

The cure is going to be a long time.....or it isnt going to be a long time....?

The fact we've heard nothing about progress on a vaccine makes the OP something I think we've all thought possible.

If it's the long haul - then that's a shame but it is what it is.
 
There will be a cure but it's going to take longer than we hoped, unless another group can get it quicker around the world somewhere. The top bods have put their current research on the back burner to all concentrate their efforts into this. The best top young scientists are working round the clock to get there as quickly as possible, then we all know the rigorous testing and process it has to go through when they do get there.

I mean it is going to take a lot longer to find a cure than we were hoping.

Why would the “top” scientists be “young”??

Your whole approach to the wind up is too obvious mate tbh.......don’t rush into the wind up.....you’ve got to think it through a bit first...ask SATW for some tips or give me a bell 👍
 
B S T C.S please back off if you would kindly do so thank you as LK2 just to let you know is a very informative poster that posts on here who is very well connected and a ITK poster so why do you come on here and slag the guy off I have had the pleasure of meeting him and he is a really nice intelligent guy has some very good contacts with Blackpool FC as well as many Football agents that he knows as well so please get your facts right if you are going to run the person down on here ok.

Lots of activity going on regarding vaccines around the world. The most advanced started clincial trials last month though even of that is effective we are a good 12 months away from being widely available.

Bill Gates Foundation is looking at 3 potentials and is building the manufacturing facilities for each of them now to crash the lead times. They may all lead nowhere though and that will be wasted money but the financial risk is worth taking.

From a therapy perspective trials with antibody rich plasma from recovered patients appears to be giving promising results - hopefully a mitigation in the short term for some.

At least all the best people around the world are united in finding a cure and a vaccine, they will work round the clock until they have done it and the time will be reduced dramatically by this happening.

I know what you mean Daz, this is early days, as it goes on it is going to get harder to cope with.

As soon as I saw that an ITK post was being made I thought to myself I hope he's run it past LythamKev.
 
It's not about coping...It's just pointless....I really don't know where it's all going TBH, but personally I'll be relying on my own immune system (not a vaccine) and I won't be hiding my life away.
 
I would say that the greatest unanswered question at the moment is - does having or have had the COVID-19 Virus and surviving make you immune - if the answer is Yes It Does, then eventually the much maligned herd immunity scenario will kick in - if No It Doesn’t then quite possibly this could be the Human Races Armageddon and unfortunately Bruce Willis and Team are not going to be flaming in on the back of Power Ballad to save mankind!

Some may say its all thats wrong with modern society 'entitled & selfish'?

Jeez its not even been 3 weeks yet many people have holidays longer!!

Some are stuck in hospital for months or are in war torn countries scared to leave their home for years! Some on the planet may not have enough food to survive.
We can watch netflix get pissed at home & go jogging or for bike rides!

Deary, I look at it quite differently ... I'd say some might say that all that's wrong with modern society is that we are paralysed by our fear of death. Millions have died in order to preserve the freedoms that we are seemingly willing to capitulate on the basis of nothing much more than 'scientific modelling' at this stage. When you look, with a critical eye, at the excess death rate that has, is or even could result from this so called, pandemic it is likley no worse than a bad flu year and certainly no worse than other epidemics that our forbears have survived.

As I said, a few Months is something that is well worth compromising in order to try and suppress the virus and prevent it overwhelming the NHS, but compromising our freedoms on a permanent basis because we're scared of death or unduly pressured that our freedom might cause someone else to die....That's utter bollox...

It also concerns me that we might be pressured or even forced to accept a fecking vaccine on the basis that not doing so might put everyone else at risk.

I know I’m new to this site and this post will instantly kill my credibility with many on here but for some it will be informative... In February I was speaking to a bloke who works for GSK and was actively seeking information from China and other large Pharmaceutical companies.
His words were that China believe there will never be a way to properly medicate this virus and that it will always come back in different strains. He said there are already three other COVID that are active in human beings and none have a cure.
Scientists, Microbiologist and top doctors will all be looking at a ten year program to fight this!
 
Do some folk think that the lockdown can just go on for months, and in the meantime the govt will either pay 80% of everyones wages or give them the dole. Whilst they sit in the garden or watch Netflix and moan about not being able to go down the pub.

Really?

The furlough scheme is expected to cost 40 BILLION POUNDS for the first 3 months. Have a think about that figure for a moment.

Then understand that the gross National Debt for the UK in 2019 was £1,821.3 billion.

Strap yourselves in, it's gonna be a bumpy ride.
 
British scientists are already in advance testing of a vaccine that they believe works. They claim that the Covid 19 strain is poorly protected and is therefore likely to be reltively easy to protect against.

Just to add a bit of positivity to this increasingly 'wrist slitting' thread of doom.
 
I was part of the training team for the Ebola virus deployment to Sierra Leone and we had real fears that it would continue to devastate the region and spread more widely. Thankfully it was contained and while there have been sporadic outbreaks, they have not manifested more widely.

We shall contain this during the summer and then the main effort will be to prevent a new outbreak during the traditional flu season commencing in September.

There will clearly be a need to be better prepared for recurrence of this virus, because our flu pandemic contingency planning wasn’t good enough. But we all know that now, don’t we?

Those doomsday preppers must be congratulating themselves....

Where exactly are you planning on “containing” it to? It’s a global pandemic.

Surely you'd contain it within any environment that an increase in cases is identified, by taking quick action, community testing, contact tracing, quarantining etc..?
