........pool used to play on Christmas morning ( 11am ko), and also on Good Friday ( same time). The thinking was that with 1m visitors in the Town for both Feasts, they would be looking for entertainment. Pool had a player called Dave Durie, who was a devout Methodist, and he wouldn’t play on either date.

That's right Midd. I had the good fortune to meet him years ago when I was a lad. He used to come to our boarding house in Dickson Road taking orders for his father's food wholesale company. He was a nice chap.

The last English league match on Christmas Day was Blackpool v Rovers in 1965. Pool won 4-2
Took me ages to get there and home again with hardly any buses . Well worth it though ! Seem to remember a debutant by name of Neil Turner scoring twice ?

I remember him well from.....when I was a lad. I was too young to see him play for the Pool, but he was my PE teacher at Palatine High School and we went to the same church off highfield road, lovely fella 😁

Not always, we played Preston in 1958 in the Afternoon and beat them 4-2 with Bill Perry on a hat-trick and the Blackburn match was pm also.

According to Roy Calley’s book, Neil Turner got 1 goal, the other 3 goals were scored by Ray Charnley, Alan Ball and Bobby Waddell. Attendance was just over 20,000, I went by car and we had to park 2 miles away from the Stadium.

Remember playing Preston on Christmas day and again on Boxing day at Deepdale ,think Pne had a goalie called John Barton in goal who was only sixteen at the time .
Good old days when they ran coaches from Fleetwood to all Blackpool home games and local derbies so could watch both Christmas games with Christmas gift money.

Two wins for the Pool, 4-2 and 3-0 at Deepdale and from memory you are correct he played in both matches and aged just sixteen.
Finney was injured at Bloomfield rd and had to go off, both he and Matthews missed the return match at Deepdale.
I was at Bloomfield road but not at Deepdale, had to spend some time with Mum over the holiday.

I thought that the Rovers game was a night match. I saw it, and the return a few days later which Pool lost 4-1......also at night ( I think) .
It WAS a long time ago, and the memory plays tricks.

We were due to play them the but there was a Polio outbreak in the town (Blackburn) and so it was left until the end of the season and we won.
