Look at that. Proper floodlight pilons then. Why were the shortened? Anyone know?An amazing pic of the Old Kop having the roof put on. Train enthusiasts will appreciate the train sidings and huge engine shed on the run up to Central Station.View attachment 373
Remember this day!
What was the reason for making them smaller though? The old ones looked massive and imposing. Was it to do with them being dangerous in high winds? Can't think of anything elseOld floodlights coming down - 1990

Does look as though them builders are carrying it as wellNo wonder they had to come down.
They were right in the middle of Bloomfield Rd
How the hell did anyone get in the No1
Thanks for the insightI believe the floodlights were reduced in size as they dazzled motorists on the then newly built Yeadon Way. The bulbs in the floodlight frame were some of the brightest available and to counter any 'dazzling' issues they effectively chopped the pylons in half.....I hated the cut down versions!!!

I think those seats only lasted a seasonA rare pic of the old East Paddock - with seats installed. I never saw it like this.View attachment 368
I was at that game I think - we were 2-0 down and came back to 2-2 at the South Paddock end. Hales and Flanagan up front for Charlton - I was selling programmes that season, used to get free admission to the match.
Early image of Bloomers before the Kop was built. Again not common knowledge that we used to have a stand at that end of the ground.View attachment 369
Happy days Dave. We would have gone up that season but for his sacking!! Instead we spent 30 years in the wilderness!!Levi, agree about Allan Brown. great footballer and a very nice guy.
I remember that some years, during the Summer (1951/2) he had a rock stall at the corner of Coronation St and Hornby Rd. used to go past often on the GPO M/bike and always got a wave.
I had a season ticket in the seated scratching shed for a year or maybe two, I think the seats only stayed for a couple of seasons .A rare pic of the old East Paddock - with seats installed. I never saw it like this.View attachment 368
My first ever game was against Rochdale in August 1990. I don't remember much of the actual game (it was by all accounts a rather dull 0-0 draw) but I do remember that they hadn't got round to re-attaching the tops of the floodlights, and the gantries were stood up by the Kop waiting to be put up. Strange what you remember...Old floodlights coming down - 1990

Was that the snow clearing prior to the ultimately postponed Tranmere home game on Boxing Day, early 1980's?? I recall the club asking for people to help shift snow from the pitch and I went down to help...it was brass monkey's!!!
